Interview with THE Boxguts

Boxguts is one of those multi-talented artists capable of dabbling across multiple artistic disciplines. He actually works at KidRobot in NYC, but on the side you can find him busting out rhymes, taggin’ up walls, and slaying the artwork. He’s a basically a b-boy with a brush.

1. When someone asks you what a custom vinyl toy is, how do you go about explaining it to them?

—A 3 dimensional surface, that someone has created, and artists can manipulate the form or surface to create a work of their own with the aesthetic toy platform.

2. What was the first toy that you ever designed and how’d it turn out?

—I used to paint on spray-paint cans, and sold them at gallery exhibitions. Not a toy, but they were my first 3D customs. The first toy was probably a 8″ dunny custom in 2004. When I look at it, there are still parts that I dig, but not a favorite.

3. What are you top 3 favorite art supplies (i.e. filbert fine line brush, purple paint, varnish, etc.)

—Ball point pen, just about any paint, krink

4. What does your work space look like? (please include picture if you have one)

—My living room, or outside depending on medium

5. Do you try to evoke a feeling out of your work? What would it be?

—Yeah. Imagine your brain exploding from within it’s skull confinements, but not fragmenting or cracking any bone. The hemoglobin filled strands of mucus that connect from each lovely lump of flesh n thought that send pulsating shock waves to one another should help to experience an infinite range of emotions.
