So halfway through this project, I decided that I was going to mess around with oil painting.  I’ve been painting with Acrylic for the past couple years and have really gotten used to it.  My curiousity led me to try oil painting because I really wanted to render the robot and tenticles so that it looks more realistic than the city backdrop.

So far, I LOVE LOVE LOVE oil.  It’s gonna be really hard to go back to acrylic, but there are the compromises.

The primary difference in the transition has been:

1.  My brushes are going to die

2.  You can generate an amazing color spectrum with limited colors (I used a raw sienna brown and black/white)

3. You get to work on a layer, go do something for a day, and work on the same wet layer to get it JUST right.  That’s gotta be the best thing about it.

4. You can mold your lines to be a bit more fluent, but it’s hard to drag oil unless you use some thinning agent.

I’ll be done later this week, so i’ll be sure to have the final pics up upon completion.
