Nico and Brixpix bring some A-game

This week, Nico Deacosta and Gary Brickel (aka Brixpix) have graced us with two new stunning pieces in the gallery.  Nico originally started his toy design on Mighty Muggs and has since moved on to doing much more elaborate customs.  This custom Celsius figure incorporates a very realistic rusty finish along with some added detail to give it a more robotic demeanor.

Brixpix’s MadL is a product of him bouncing back and forth between oriental influences.  He’s actually provided a fantastic writeup that captures his inspiration on this piece:

“Katsushika Hokusai’s Great Wave woodblock print seemed to swim around my frontal lobe so I seized on that and tried to encorporate a Japanese and aquatic theme throughout. Staying true to my animation roots, the piece is somber, yet cartoony at the same time. The faces are what I deem most important in my pieces. The details are there, although not in the same numbers as I usually bring. I wanted the details to stand out and give the weary observer a chance to rest inbetween eye candy rushes.”

We’re very lucky to have these artists submit their work into the gallery.  Lets show our appreciation for them by letting them know how delicious their work really is.  Vote on their work HERE.

Infectious iPhone Skin Review

iphone skin

This past week we nabbed up a couple Infectious iPhone skins.  We always knew that these things looked awesome because they had a slew of super talented artists in their network, but we had other questions. How was the vinyl going to hold up?  How easy is it going to be to install?  And most importantly, how cool is going to look?

Durability/Fit

Myself being a regular thrasher of all things, having a case on my phone is pretty much mandatory.  So the major question here was, “How is my skin going to adapt to the casing?”  The first thing I noticed was that the hole for the camera was a bit to small and the sticker would likely block some light from the camera lens.  The fix?  Hole puncher.  Just take that skin and put the corner of it in a standard hole puncher and blammo, the hole is large enough to accommodate just about every iPhone case out there.

Now looking at the front side, I had another obstacle with my case.  My case wraps around the button which made the Infectious skin a little awkward to put on.  With a little bit of trimming, I clipped off some of the area around the button to make it fit the case.  This is most easily done by just sticking the skin on the phone and using a razor, but you can get by fine with just some scissors if you do it before you apply the decal.

Applying Infectious skins is just like applying a regular sticker…except easier.  The 3M vinyl they use has some very subtle reinforcement to it which allows it to hold its form and reduce the likelihood of getting any air bubbles.  Not to mention, the decals are thick and extremely durable.

Price

At $14.99, the Infectious skins are expensive decals, but take this into consideration:  1) You have really high quality vinyl, 2) You’re not only supporting a creative company doing everything domestically right here in SF, but also a bunch of really talented artists, and 3) You will be just THAT much happier every time you look at your phone (which is VERY often).

Concensus

With hundreds of designs to pick from, the Infectious skins are just a really cool way to trick out your phone and be a little different.  You can check out some of the designs we’ve brought in to the store from artists like MAD, Friends with You, Dalek, Buff Monster, and Acrylicana.
